![]() ![]() Tarantino conveys the casual, almost indifferent approach that the film's criminal characters take to violence in scenes like Pumpkin and Honey Bunny's first argument, Jules's first murder in Brett's apartment, and Vincent's accidental slaying of Marvin. In the highly aestheticized universe of Pulp Fiction, violence is an everyday yet unpredictable phenomenon, often reflecting the fundamentally unforeseeable and surprising nature of life itself. Discussing the difference between pigs and dogs in the final scene, Jules tells Vincent, "Personality goes a long way," a statement that also reflects the film's consistent and unapologetic elevation of style over substance. Later in the film, Vincent's oafish, everyman qualities contrast with Winston Wolfe's curt, businesslike demeanor, suggesting the broad range of personalities that career criminals can inhabit. Vincent and Mia's dance scene at Jackrabbit Slim's serves little purpose other than being a vehicle for each of their styles as dancers and highlighting the personal chemistry between the two. Seemingly minor visual details like Jules's Jheri curl, Jody's piercings, and Lance's mounted high heel shoes lend each character a distinct personality, many of which reference stylistic touchstones from bygone eras. Tarantino, himself a master of stylization, imbues every character in Pulp Fiction with an inimitable and eclectic personal aesthetic. the mob boss, the corrupt boxer, the femme fatale) from bygone film genres about crime. In all these ways, Tarantino lends surprising moral dimensions to the "flat" stock characters (e.g. ![]() Despite being criminals, many characters still experience moments of moral clarity, such as when Butch decides to rescue Marsellus, or when Jules rethinks his life as a gangster. In addition to coolly performing executions and injecting hard drugs, the film's career criminals also bicker, whine, and make amateurish mistakes, undermining the hardboiled archetypes from which Tarantino draws their characterizations. Tarantino represents crime and criminals in a morally neutral and highly aestheticized fashion, emphasizing the combination of glamour, squalor, and banality that typifies their lives. Virtually every character in Pulp Fiction is implicated in some kind of criminal enterprise, whether as a perpetrator, an accomplice, or a witness. Significantly, Jules, who recognizes the act as a "miracle" and pledges to give up criminal life, survives the film, whereas Vincent, who refuses to acknowledge the "miracle," dies under extremely unlucky circumstances that Jules would also likely consider an act of "divine intervention." Morality Their disagreement suggests a larger debate about fate versus free will: whether mankind is subject to higher forces, or whether life's events unfold spontaneously and according to no particular plan. Vincent, on the other hand, believes that they were just lucky. Jules believes that they survived due to an act of "divine intervention," and tries to persuade Vincent that God has spared them for a reason. FateĪfter they are miraculously unharmed by a hail of bullets, Jules and Vincent have an extended philosophical argument over the nature of the universe. ![]() Through the theme of time and timing, especially bad timing, Tarantino forces his archetypal, "stock" characters to confront ludicrous and unpredictable situations. Unfortunate timing dooms many of the film's characters, such as Vincent, who chooses to use the bathroom at three separate points at unlucky moments, and Butch, who stops at an intersection at the exact moment his arch-nemesis Marsellus is crossing the street. As a result, the audience must deduce the order in which the events of the film take place. Tarantino intentionally disorients the audience by showing the events of the film out of order-most obviously, beginning with the final scene in the diner-without any subtitles or title cards to explain when the film is flashing forward and backward in time (with the notable, comic exception of the Wolf's arrival at Jimmie's, which takes place exactly "nine minutes and thirty-seven seconds later"). In the world of Pulp Fiction, timing is everything. They don’t try to actively aid the party in obtaining a better outcome than they do in the original timeline, and their behavior seems reflexive instead of conscious. However, Whispers seem to be limited to robotically attempting to preserve the original FF7 timeline. Chapter 17: Healed Barret when Sephiroth stabbed him.Chapter 17: Kept Hojo from revealing that Cloud wasn’t in SOLDIER.Chapter 13: Ensured the Turks can drop the Sector 7 plate when the party wins the fight.Chapter 8: Held Cloud back from killing Reno in the church and dragged Cloud and Aerith towards their escape.Chapter 4: Injured Jesse so Cloud has to go on the Sector 5 reactor mission.Chapter 2: Ensured Cloud and Aerith meet in Sector 1 and chased Aerith away when Shinra soldiers appeared. Here are just a few instances where the Whispers intervened to ensure the events seen in the original FF7 transpired: Sometimes these actions are subtle, and other times the Whispers act forcefully to protect the timeline. If you look back at the events of FF7 Remake, the Whispers appeared to change any significant events that would have pushed Cloud and the party away from their journey to the Shinra building and subsequent pursuit of Sephiroth. To do this, it utilizes the Whispers, arbiters of fate who “correct” events when they start to stray from the script. For whatever reason, the planet seeks to ensure the events that occurred in the original FF7 happen across all timelines. The Midgar we play through in Final Fantasy 7 Remake is likely not the Midgar seen in the original, but an alternate Midgar in another timeline. The Lifestream’s perception of space and time seems to also extend to parallel timelines. If Shinra had extinguished the Lifestream via extraction of Mako, it wouldn’t have only doomed the planet in the present, but in the past as well. This means Shinra’s use of Mako energy was even direr than it seemed. ![]() This consciousness can react to dangers to the planet with a multitude of tools, one of which is the Whispers.Īccording to information in FF7 Remake, the Lifestream perceives all space and time experienced by all the souls that ever comprised it simultaneously. ![]() The Lifestream is both a source of great power and the collective consciousness of the planet. When living things die, their souls return to the stream. The soul of each creature that lives on Gaia is born of a gathering of concentrated energy beneath the planet’s crust called the Lifestream. The planet Final Fantasy 7 (and Remake) takes place on is called Gaia. So, I’ll break down a bit of the lore of the original game before we get to what the Whispers are and what they’re trying to do. If you haven’t, none of the last hour and a half or so of FF7 Remake is going to make any sense to you. Okay, so, Final Fantasy 7 Remake really assumes you’ve played the original game. These ghoulish entities are sent by the consciousness of the planet to… Wait, let’s back up a bit. It is not a spoiler but it literally ends when you leave Midgar so yup.The big difference between the original FF7 and the remake, at least at first, is the presence of the Whispers. Square Enix took that and turned it into a fun 30+ hour game. The Midgar section in the original FF7 was around 3 - 4 hours long only, there is not much story there, just a set up. The biggest issue is that the story really doesn't go anywhere, it is just a setup. The camera will just go all over the place. The camera is ok for the most parts but some battles can get really clunky, especially if the enemies are in a small area or if they are flying. You don't get a chance to go to that area anytime you want. ![]() ONCE YOU LEAVE AN AREA, THAT IS USUALLY IT. I wish you had more opportunities to explore the city but you don't really get that. ![]() There is still some customization involve but it mostly deals with material as opposed to stats, since stats are generally gain to a certain extend. In the places that you are given a choice to "grind," it is not worth it since the enemies give so little experience points and you have to leave areas and return for the enemies to revive. This is not really an RPG in the sense you don't really get much opportunity to level up since it follows a fairly traditional action game (stage 1, stage 2, etc.). THIS GAME IS GREAT, but it is not perfect. ![]() NOTE: You can register for an account, using a valid email address on the Online App Box website. In some editors you can set the selection function to automatically jump to the nearest zero-point crossing or you can do it manually. This is the ideal place to trim a sound file because if you cut it anywhere else, the audio will be forced to jump abruptly to a different value when spliced to another another section, thereby creating an audible click. Clicks and Zero-Point Crossings: A zero-point crossing is the place where the amplitude of a sound crosses the zero or center line of a waveform. They allow ultimate control of every aspect of the sound down to the sample level, allowing you to tweak with ease and well beyond the limits of most DAWs.ġ. The use of a waveform editor is crucial in this process and part of my preproduction in developing content and material to be used in larger contexts.Īnyone that creates and uses samples (as individual files or in a sampler instrument) or audio loops can reap the benefits of a waveform editor. You could simply select the area and delete the content, or reduce the amplitude for a more subtle approach.Ī major part of my artistic practice as an experimental composer involves isolating fragments of field recordings or improvisations in my studio recorded with synths or guitar. It is often a good idea to remove background noise in multiple passes, using a more subtle approach each pass, as opposed to an aggressive one-time pass, which may introduce the notorious and hated gurgling effect.Īnother benefit of the spectral view is that short transient noises become immediately apparent and can often be easily eliminated like erasing an unwanted splotch in a graphics program like Photoshop. They are often used in conjunction with a DAW.įor example, if you preconfigure your Audio preferences in Logic to use a specific waveform editor, selecting a region and clicking will open the file in the waveform editor, where you can perform destructive editing and directly replace the file in the session. The true benefits of the waveform editor lie in their graphic interfaces and their ability to surgically isolate, tweak, repair and polish a single sound or sample. While some editors do have multitrack functionality, I prefer to record and mix in a DAW. In programs like Audition for example, clicking on a True Peak level in the amplitude statistics panel will move the cursor directly to the problem spot on the editing window. This allows you to instantly identify and locate problems with inter-sample peaks, RMS and perceived loudness levels, correlation and phase problems, clipped samples, etc. While you can edit audio files or regions in any standard DAW, dedicated waveform editors are optimized for this purpose.Īdobe Audition Amplitude Statistics panelĪ feature-rich editor will allow you instant access to amplitude, frequency and phase statistics on a specific file or a selected part a file. ![]() ![]() Difference Between a DAW and a Dedicated Waveform EditorĭAWs like Pro Tools and Logic Pro are intended for multitrack session projects. If you find yourself editing single sound files on a regular basis, finding the right editor will be time and money well spent. There are also freeware and shareware choices such as Audacity and Ocenaudio, low cost apps like WavePad and Loop Editor, and even browser-based applications such as Hya-Wave. While most DAWs are capable of waveform editing at some level, anyone that wants to get surgical about sound editing will need some sort of dedicated waveform editing application, such as Adobe Audition, Sound Forge Pro, SpectraLayers Pro and iZotope RX 6 to name a few. Knowing the basics of waveform editing is essential for sound designers, field recordists, composers and performers that use samplers or loop-based material, dialogue editors, and anyone that’s involved in audio editing in general. ![]() Other interests are non-pharmacological interventions, clinimetrics and essential nursing care. ![]() She has specialized in pain and sedation assessment in non-verbal and preverbal individuals. Our new hospital was like a beautiful newborn with excellent genes (a matter of Nature) but was nurtured under the influence of the many occupants. With humans you never know entirely what to expect and how they respond to a new environment. How to respond to these downsides is still being considered. Patients themselves may feel isolated and at the same time tend to stay in the room – with inactivity as an undesirable consequence. For example, nurses feel they cannot adequately monitor their patients, who also lack social control by fellow patients. The 100% single-occupancy rooms in the general wards in the new hospital have their benefits but also some –partly unexpected– downsides. The findings will be presented during the presentation and will leave us with some interesting reflections. Topics included patients’ and nurses’ perceptions of the ward environments, the patients’ sleep quality, and patient-safety related topics such as falls, resuscitations and monitoring. In our executive board-commissioned WELCOME study we evaluated how the new setting compared against the old one with regard to several topics. These features should prove beneficial for both patients and hospital workers. This newly built hospital incorporates many features of a healing environment. In 2018 we took into use a brand new hospital next to our outdated, old one. This simplest use case (some time from now) in TimeMath looked too far from "how you pronounce it": TBH, using the library myself only eventually, I have never been too happy with it: it never felt really natural, so I constantly forgot "what should I do to calculate '2 days ago'". ![]() One of the attempts to find an alternative has led me to the creation of time_math2, which gained some (modest) popularity by presenting things this way: (time, 1). I am not completely against-any-monkey-patches kind of guy, it just doesn't sit right, to say "number has a method to produce duration". Prominent ActiveSupport's answer of extending simple numbers to respond to 1.year never felt totally right to me. The idea of this library (as well as the idea of the previous one) grew of the simple question "how do you say + 1 hour in good Ruby?" This question also leads (me) to notifying that other arithmetical operations (like rounding, or up to with step ) seem to be applicable to Time or Date values as well. While in ActiveSupport-enabled context TimeCalc may seem redundant (you'll probably use time - 1.day anyways), some of the functionality is easier with TimeCalc (rounding to different units) or just not present in ActiveSupport (time sequences, iterate with skippking) also may be helpful for third-party libraries which want to use TimeCalc underneath but don't want to be broken in Rails context.
